Last week, Vermont Governor Phil Scott vetoed the House and Senate-approved S.22 Bill that would have legalized marijuana for adult consumption, possession, and home cultivation.
While many were disappointed in the decision, none were more vocal than Scott’s own Lieutenant Governor David Zuckerman, who called the veto “very short-sighted” and added that he was “sad to see the Governor disregard the will of most Vermonters and reduce individual liberties in our state.”

Marijuana advocates around the country were saddened to hear that Vermont Governor Phil Scott vetoed the bill that would have legalized recreational marijuana in his state yesterday. If passed, the bill would have made Vermont the first state to legalize via the state legislature rather than a ballot measure.  Although he vetoed the bill, Gov.

Scott said he was sending the bill back with suggestions for another path forward and called for changes to be made to the proposal, such as more aggressive penalties for smoking pot while driving or in the presence of children.

Today was Scott’s deadline, and the Republican Governor made the decision to veto S.22. Gov. Scott offered some semblance of hope for future legalization efforts in Vermont by saying, “We must get this right.

Earlier this month, Vermont lawmakers made the historic decision to approve their own recreational cannabis bill. This measure could have made them the ninth state to legalize marijuana, but more importantly the first to legalize marijuana through legislative channels instead of through a citizen referendum.

Republican Gov. Phil Scott said Wednesday that he planned to veto a bill making Vermont the ninth state to legalize recreational marijuana but indicated that he was willing to work with the legislature on a compromise.

Scott said he is sending the bill back with suggestions for another path forward and suggested that changes could be made to the bill in a special session this summer.
"We must get this right," Scott said.

We have been covering the proposed marijuana legalization bill in Vermont very closely this legislative session, so you can imagine my disappointment when this letter came to my inbox today, stating that Vermont Governor Phil Scott vetoes legalization bill.Governor Scott states that he want to get this right and that perhaps they need to move a little bit slower on this issue in both his letter and his press conference.
