“My cannabis career journey and growing WFBW have allowed me to rid myself of any of the shame I had from wanting to consume cannabis loudly and proudly because I knew the benefits and the power of the plant,” Maiyegun tells Refinery29. Powell’s relationship to marijuana also developed as she worked with it professionally, explaining, “It wasn’t until I started working in the cannabis industry that I got more understanding of the science behind the plant and the different ways you can consume cannabis.” Both reiterate the importance of supporting Black-owned shops, especially in a field that is white and male-dominated. “It is important to think about the impact of the dollars you are spending and play a role in helping Black people benefit from this industry that was built on our backs,” they explain.
