Bermuda Senate Approves Cannabis Decriminalization

Not even a week after Bermuda’s House of Assembly passed a bill to decriminalize cannabis possession, the Senate has done the same.

With support from all sides, the island nation pushed forward on its Misuse of Drugs [Decriminalization of Cannabis] Amendment Act 2017, which removes criminal prosecution for the possession of 7 grams of cannabis or less.

Prosecutors will still be permitted to lay charges for any amount of pot if there is evidence of potential trafficking in a given case. Further, police are instructed to seize any cannabis — regardless of the amount.

The Amendment was supported by the government, the opposition, and independent senators as well.

“What we are doing is not promoting drug use and we are not encouraging young persons to use cannabis,” said Progressive Labour Party MP Jason Hayward. “We want to further the education regarding drug abuse in our society to protect our young persons.”

Other senators commented positively saying that the Amendment was “long overdue.”
