John Boehner explains why he changed his mind on marijuana

John Boehner appeared on the Today show to explain why he’s gone to pot.

The Republican and former Speaker of the House sat in with host Savannah Guthrie on Friday to discuss why he made the decision to join the advisory board of the legal cannabis company Acreage Holdings earlier this week.

“I found myself, like a lot of Americans over the last 10 years or so, beginning to look at this issue a little differently,” Boehner said in the interview with Guthrie. “When I began to sit down Kevin Murphy, the founder of Acreage Holdings. I began to learn more. And I had conversations with my friends, and I found myself in a position where I thought I could lend my voice to this discussion about the medical use of marijuana.”

Acreage Holdings produces and dispenses cannabis throughout 11 states with legal marijuana programs. His latest job comes nine years after Boehner said he was “unalterably opposed” to legalization.
