20-Year-Old Dies After Being Denied Lung Transplant Over Marijuana Use


A young Utah man has died after being denied a lung transplant due to traces of marijuana in his system. At the age of 19, Riley Hancey caught pneumonia after contracting the flu. The pneumonia led to a lung infection, causing both of his lungs to collapse. Hancey spent two months hospitalized at the University of Utah Hospital, where doctors determined that he needed a double lung transplant in order to survive.

However, the University of Utah Hospital denied the young man a transplant when Hancey tested positive for THC.

Researchers Find That Even Low Doses of MDMA Enhance Emotional Empathy


A new study published this month in the Journal of Psychopharmacology reports that even small doses of MDMA can enhance emotional empathy towards others. Researchers in the Netherlands and Switzerland conducted six double-blind studies on a total of 118 participants. Each individual ingested a 75mg MDMA pill, a 125mg MDMA pill, or a placebo pill, and then completed an empathy test.

The researchers found that the drug enhanced emotional empathy, meaning a person's affective response to another person's emotional state.

Swiss Advocacy Group Campaigns for Full-Scale Cannabis Legalization


A new advocacy campaign in Switzerland hopes to end cannabis prohibition and create a taxed and regulated nation-wide industry. 

Currently, cannabis containing less than 1% THC is legal and sold over the counter in the notoriously neutral country, but any bud that will actually get you high can still land you a 100 franc fine or jail time if you’re holding more than nine grams.

According to Swiss newspaper The Local, the new proposal would be similar to American single state efforts to legalize, with a taxed and regulated retail system making THC-full weed available in the same manner
