First-time marijuana use in college at highest level in three decades

Levels of first-time marijuana use in college have increased sharply in the past three years to the highest levels recorded in the past three decades. In 2015, about one in five college students became a first-time marijuana user.

These results come from the annual Monitoring the Future study, which has been tracking substance use among young adults for the past 36 years. It is conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Michigan and is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Study Finds Federal Legalization of Medical Marijuana Could Save $1 Billion for Medicaid


A study published this week in the Health Affairs journal reports that Medicaid patients in states with legal medical marijuana were using fewer prescription drugs than patients in states where MMJ is prohibited. The study looked at quarterly data on all fee-for-service Medicaid prescriptions between 2007 and 2014. The researchers found “statistically and economically meaningful reductions in prescription drug use associated with” medical marijuana laws.

Medicaid will not reimburse patients for medical marijuana treatments, thanks to the Schedule I status of cannabis.

Marijuana use higher in pregnant teens than nonpregnant peers






(HealthDay)—More than twice as many pregnant 12- to 17-year-olds use marijuana as their nonpregnant peers, and significantly more use the drug than pregnant women in their 20s, according to a letter published online April 17 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.


The new findings stem from a 2002 to 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health that explored marijuana use among 410,000 females ages 12 to 44. About 14,400 survey participants were pregnant at the time of polling. All participants were asked about their pregnancy status and marijuana use during the prior month.

For young adults, cigarettes more pleasurable with alcohol than with pot

Young adults get more pleasure from smoking cigarettes while they are drinking alcohol than they do while using marijuana, according to a new UC San Francisco study.

The study is the first to document that tobacco accompanied by alcohol provides cigarette smokers with a greater perceived reward than when they smoke cigarettes while using .
The study will be published online April 18 in the journal Addiction Research & Theory.
"What we've learned may have important implications for understanding differences in co-use of cigarettes with alcohol versus marijuana," said co-first author Noah R.

New Hampshire Legislators Debate Marijuana Decriminalization


The New Hampshire Senate is currently debating the details of a bill that would decriminalize marijuana possession. Last month, the state House overwhelmingly voted in favor of a bill that would make possession of an ounce or less of pot a violation, not a crime. The bill would prohibit police from arresting anyone possessing that small amount of weed, and set a fine of $100 for a first-time offense.

“The prohibition is crumbling,” Matt Simon, New England political director for the Marijuana Policy Project, said.
