The Smokers Club Fest was better than Coachella, I’ll be the one to say it. That’s pretty much my recap for the weekend. With only five days off since Beychella, The Smokers Club Fest took over The Queen Mary in Long Beach for two days on April 28-29, 2018, and passed the lit-ness test with flying colors.
This is what happens when you bring together the hottest, most diverse set of rappers in the game. A huge cheers and thank you to Jonny Shipes and Smoke DZA, founders of the legendary Smokers Club. This was underground and mainstream combined into one party, with no room for bougie music-industry bullshit. From OGs such as Juicy J to new school acts including Lil Pump, issa vibe.
As a stoner, I was in my playground. The funny thing is, after somehow finessing my way into the hotel parking lot right next to the ship, I walked to the box office only to remember I had forgotten my weed in the car.
Should I go back? Should I not go back? The question of the day. I really wasn’t far, as most of the GA had to park in a structure offsite and be transported via shuttle. The only dilemma: Did I want to have security dig into my own bud, or could I rely on others?
Smokers Club did not disappoint. I don’t even know why I questioned it. There was bud everywhere. Prerolls, Backwoods, flowers, Vape Pens — my girl even handed me a bubbler as we got kicked out of the photo pit. I used to love bubblers! How the hell did they sneak that in? It was huge. I was here for it. That was my first encounter with the generosity wafting around in the air. You couldn’t be stingy if you tried.
Comparing this to my traumatizing experience with undercover cops at Coachella, we walked right by a police officer in the artist compound while smoking and he didn’t do shit. Shout out to my Weedmaps fam, we had a beautiful hookah session right behind the main stage shortly after Ty Dolla $ign’s set. Large, giant-size hookahs were being tended to by staff all day, as they repeatedly switched out the coals any time one got weak.
The hookah hit the spot so hard. There’s something about the smoke going in and out of my lungs that’s just so soothing and calming. At this point, i had successfully ran into the good people over at West Coast Cure — specifically Sour Matt, who laced me with the Prerolls I had been yearning for. I couldn’t leave without hitting the fat Backwoods he rolled, either. That would have been rude.
Highlights from the performances included Juicy J’s signature “Slob On My Knob” catchphrase, and an 18-year-old getting the lapdance of a lifetime to “Bandz A Make Her Dance.” And let’s not forget the free Prerolls that were being thrown into the crowd like candy.
Day 1 was something to remember forever. Wiz Khalifa performing “Kush & OJ” — one of the greatest mixtapes of all time? Honestly, it doesn’t get much better than that. Large, inflatable joints soon filled the stage as Wiz sparked up time after time, song after song. “Mesmerized” is the one that gets me every time.
While Kid Cudi’s closing set on Sunday ended with no Kanye West sightings, seeing Cudder live was the icing on the cake for the whole weekend. There’s nothing like seeing a genuinely happy, high-spirited Kid Cudi, who is a walking superhero to anyone battling depression or struggling with addiction. His music is not only relatable, but also relays a message of self-love.
