Military vets give strong support for legalizing medical marijuana, poll finds

An overwhelming majority of American war veterans now support legal access to medical marijuana, according to a new poll.

A national survey released on Thursday by the American Legion found that 81 percent of military veteran households “want to have cannabis as a federally-legal treatment,” reports Military.com.

The poll was conducted for the Legion by Five Corners Strategies, which surveyed veteran households that included 513 veterans and 289 family members throughout 39 states, with a margin of error of 3.45 percentage points.

Ninety-two percent of veterans also showed an interest in more scientific cannabis research for mental and physical conditions, as well as a possible substitute for prescription opioids.

“One of the reasons we did this is to prove to lawmakers this is a politically safe topic,” said American Legion director Louis Celli in an interview with Stripes.com. “It’s no longer ‘refer madness.’ It’s legitimate science of the 21st century.”
