Marijuana use not linked to kidney disease, study finds

Using cannabis doesn’t do harm to kidneys, new medical research suggests.

A study published in the American Journal of Medicine concludes that moderate marijuana has no association to kidney disease in younger people, reports HealthDay.

Lead investigator Dr.  Murray Mittleman, a professor of epidemiology at Harvard University’s School of Public Health and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, assembled a team of experts to analyze health data from nearly 14,000 U.S. adults between the ages 18 to 59 who all took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2014.

The team checked for an increase in urine albumin, which is a marker for kidney disease, throughout over 7,000 patients who admitted to using cannabis at least once. More than 2,000 of those patients admitted to using pot within the past 30 days.

“Our research provides some reassuring evidence suggesting that there is no detrimental effect of infrequent, relatively light use of marijuana on kidney function among healthy adults under age 60,” said Mittleman.
