NFL open to study medical marijuana for players

The National Football League could be taking one step closer to allowing their players to use medical cannabis.

The NFL recently wrote a letter to the league’s Players Association offering to work together to study the potential of marijuana as a healthier alternative to opioid painkillers, reports the Washington Post.

“We look forward to working with the Players Association on all issues involving the health and safety of our players,” said Joe Lockhart, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications.

While the NFLPA already has its own study underway, the letter marks a significant change in the NFL’s harsh anti-pot policy that allows full-season suspensions in some instances. Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson was handed a 10-game ban in 2016 for using medical marijuana to help treat Crohn’s Disease.

Meanwhile, some players like 30-year-old Eugene Monroe are retiring early from the sport they love, out of fear that years of physical punishment may lead to permanent brain damage such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).
