Shoppers Drug Mart Wants to Sell Weed Online in Canada

Canada’s largest pharmacy chain has just entered into a partnership that could see the retailer selling medical marijuana online across the country.

Shoppers Drug Mart has a retail footprint of over 1,200 stores in the Great White North and it’s no secret the company has been looking to enter the cannabis sector for some time. Their aspirations started in October 2016 when Shoppers applied to become a licensed producer (LP) of cannabis for the sole purpose of marijuana distribution.

The most recent efforts by the retailer come from a supply agreement that has been linked with Aphria, one of Canada’s largest LPs. If Health Canada approves Shoppers request to be an LP, the drugstore will commit to purchasing a predetermined amount of medicinal cannabis from Aphria annually, for five years.

In the deal, Aphria would supply the retailer with dried cannabis and a selection of oils, which would be sold online.
