Malawi Gold Marijuana Strain Review

Strain Overview

The Scoop: You’ll probably want to approach this strain with caution and use her judiciously. Malawi Gold is one of the more intriguing Sativas on the market today, and  her effects are a consciousness-expanding journey into the creative realm. Born in the subtropical region of southeastern Africa, Malawi Gold lives up to its name … and legend.

The Result: A Sativa to rule all Sativas, this Landrace strain requires you bring an open mind and a seriously elevated tolerance level.

The Verdict: Due to its need for an extremely warm climate, Malawi Gold is not for every grower. You’ll need to come prepared with a super warm indoor setup, or live in a hospitable region (for the strain, at least), if you want the big yields this plant can produce. As far as the smoke goes, if you’re not a fan of psychoactive strains, you may want to take a pass on this one.

Strain Profile

The Science: Malawi Gold is one of the most prolific crops cultivated in the region. Primarily cultivated as an illegal export, Malawi’s indigenous Sativa strain is coveted globally for her complex terpene and cannabinoid profile – known for instilling an intensely cerebral mindset. Tested by Analytical 360, Malawi Gold routinely returns results of between 14 and 24 percent THC.

Appearance: True to her Sativa Landrace gene pool, Malawi Gold’s leaves are elongated and maintain a dark green, almost black, hue. The buds themselves are composed of even darker green calyxes, intertwined by long yellow and orange pistils beneath a rich sugar coating. Actual Malawi Gold harvests from Malawi are cured in tightly bound banana leaves, which give the buds the golden appearance of their namesake.

Consistency: These buds can be extremely dense. As you might expect with an unadulterated strain, such as Malawi Gold, the trichrome covering leaves the nuggets sticky to the touch; to the effect that the buds are gooey little pebbles between your fingers.

Scent: Other than the golden hue (which is typically only true of batches actually grown in Malawi), Malawi Gold’s other defining characteristic is its super sweet taste and smell. Many concur this strain smells like pineapples and other sweet tropical fruits. Under the fruity goodness, you’ll often experience a hint (or more) of spices and earthiness.

Taste: Here is where the beauty of the plant comes into play. Malawi Gold tastes as if you had just plucked a fresh pineapple from the branch and sliced it open under a warm tropical sun. The utterly sweet flavor will cure your sweet tooth’s hankering, and leave you with a nutty and earthy, almost almond-flavored, aftertaste.

Effect: Inhale the smoke from this über potent plant and get ready for a long lasting ride that borders on a hallucinogenic trip. An upbeat, clean and clear psychoactive high will wash over you, leaving you feeling warm and happy from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.

Strain Background: Malawi Gold is considered some of the best and most pure Sativa in the world. Its psychoactive properties are derived from years of cultivation in the subtropical African climate. The tourism and economic profit generated by Malawi Gold led the country to list this strain as one of its major exports.

Medical Uses: Mood elevator, pain reliever.
