DEA Chief Still Doesn’t Believe Marijuana Is Medicine – News

Although more than half of the nation has recognized the cannabis plant, in some form or fashion, for its medicinal capabilities, the acting chief of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Chuck Rosenberg, still believes that “marijuana is not medicine.”

At a recent event in Ohio, one of the 29 states to legalize a comprehensive medicinal cannabis program, Rosenberg told the crowd that marijuana does not, in any way, have therapeutic benefits in a manner similar to prescription drugs approved by the U.S.

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Says It’s Time to Decriminalize Marijuana





Ohio Supreme Court Justice says it’s time to decriminalize marijuana, Justice O’Neill, a democrat holding an Ohio statewide office, said making marijuana legal is working in Colorado and doing it in Ohio would bring hundreds of millions of dollars in sales taxes.  O’Neill also announced earlier this year that he’s considering stepping down and making a run for governor, but he doesn’t plan on making a decision until the end of the year.According to U.S. News:“The time has come for new thinking,” O’Neill said in his prepared remarks.

Ohio Supreme Court Judge Wants to Free Everyone Imprisoned for Non-Violent Cannabis Crimes – News

Ohio Supreme Court Judge William O’Neill spoke at a meeting of Buckeye state Democrats this week and used his pulpit to call for an end to cannabis prohibition and the release of all non-violent cannabis offenders from the state’s jails.

According to the Guardian, O’Neill has expressed interest in running for Governor of Ohio in the next general election, but has put off the decision until the end of the year.

Do Legal Cannabis Shops Lead to an Increase in Property Crimes?


In order to prevent crime from taking place on the grounds of cannabis outlets, most businesses have hi-tech security systems and guards to protect their product. But researchers from Ohio State University recently conducted a three-year study in Denver that found an increase of property crimes in the areas adjacent to marijuana retail stores. 

The findings show that these neighboring areas saw 84 more property crimes compared to those not in the vicinity of a nearby cannabis shop.

Ohio Medical Marijuana Committee Debate High MMJ Licensing Fees



This June, Ohio's medical marijuana law came into effect, with plans to be fully operational by next September. However, the state has some of the highest fees of any MMJ-legal state, which has drawn criticism from some state regulators.

Ohio is offering 24 licenses to cultivators, 40 to product processors, and 60 to dispensaries. The fee for applying for any medical marijuana license is a non-refundable $2,000, and growers must pay an additional license fee of $18,000 to $180,000 depending on the size of the grow-op.
