On Tuesday, the Lexington Urban County Council is scheduled to debate and vote on a resolution supporting the legalization of medical marijuana for qualifying patients in Kentucky.
Buoyed by Lexington’s Mayor Jim Gray, the potential Democratic replacement for incumbent Representative Andy Barr (R-6th District), told Kentucky.com he supports legalizing medical marijuana for the state’s qualified patients.
“Doctors should be able to prescribe medical marijuana, which has been shown to reduce nausea during chemotherapy, and reduce chronic pain,” Gray said. “I support the council resolution, and the legislation before the state legislature.
House Bill 166, would legalize and restrict medical marijuana to certain patients with qualifying conditions, establish requirements for cultivation, production, processing, distribution, and the sale of medicinal cannabis in collectives.

Lexington’s County Council will discuss the resolution of support at a work session scheduled for 3 p.m. today and have called for a special meeting for 5 p.m. to vote on it.
Introduced by Rep. John Sims Jr. (D- 70th District), House Bill 166 is supported by Democratic Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.
With HB 166 and Senate Bill 118 before the state legislature, Kentucky’s Compassionate Access and Relief for Effectiveness – otherwise known As CAREKY – is hoping 2018 will be the year that medical marijuana comes to the Bluegrass State.
