Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner Sues Big Pharma, Drops All Marijuana Possession Charges : news

Apparently the average taxpayer cost to house an inmate for a year is around $31,000…imagine how much money we would save if we turned loose all the nonviolent marijuana offenders in the justice system. Not counting the incredible revenue from taxing the sale of legal weed. Seems like a no-brainer to me, yet we toss thousands of dollars and years of innocent lives down the drain.

Just looked up some stats, there are about 1,300,000 inmates in state prisons, and about 16% of them are in for nonviolent drug crimes. At $31,000 a year, turning these nonviolent offenders loose would save taxpayers $6,488,000,000 annually.

Granted, this is for all drugs, not just weed-but it also doesn’t count federal prisoners or inmates in local/county jails. It also doesn’t count the money poured into local and federal police departments to catch and prosecute drug users, nor the potential contributions these prisoners could make to our society and economy, if they weren’t being caged like animals. All I can say is, what an insane waste of time and money, and a shame on our country.
