UK legalizes marijuana for medical use


Medical patients in the United Kingdom will be allowed to obtain medical cannabis prescriptions for certain conditions.

The Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced on Thursday that patients with qualifying conditions will be allowed treatment with cannabis-derived medicinal products, reports The Guardian.

British lawmakers made the decision months after 12-year-old epilepsy patient Billy Caldwell was given an emergency license for medical marijuana after his cannabis oil medication was confiscated at a London Airport.

“Recent cases involving sick children made it clear to me that our position on cannabis-related medical products was not satisfactory,” Javid said in a statement. “Following advice from two sets of independent advisers, I have taken the decision to reschedule cannabis-derived medicinal products – meaning they will be available on prescription.”

Under the new ruling, marijuana will be reclassified as a Schedule 2 drug with medical value, as opposed to its former classification as a Schedule 1 drug with no therapeutic qualities.
