Sanjay Gupta tells Jeff Sessions how marijuana can save lives from opioids

Sanjay Gupta hopes he can change Jeff Sessions’ mind about marijuana.

Gupta has written an open letter to the current Attorney General about the relationship between cannabis and opioids, just days before the premiere of CNN’s special report, Weed 4: Pot Versus Pills.

“Not only can cannabis work for a variety of conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and pain, sometimes, it is the only thing that works,” Gupta said. “I changed my mind, and I am certain you can, as well.”

Sessions holds a long history of opposing cannabis for both recreational and medicinal use. Long before recent comments comparing marijuana to heroin, Sessions also supported death sentences for drug dealers while working as Alabama’s attorney general over 20 years ago.

However, Gupta himself was also once against marijuana legalization and medical use in general.

“Before I started this worldwide, in-depth investigation, I was not particularly impressed by the results of medical marijuana research, but a few years later, as I started to dedicate time with patients and scientists in various countries, I came to a different conclusion,” said Gupta.
