When I began struggling to fall and stay asleep due to a combination of constant travel and late work hours, I tried everything in the book — melatonin (which would wake me up in the middle of the night and leave me groggy in the morning), weed (which put me in a daze the next day)), milk (hello, late-night bathroom trips), lavender oil (nice to smell, but not really a sleep aid) — but the only thing that’s worked without awful side effects is CBD oil.
It still leaves me a bit foggy-headed the next day, but not nearly as groggy as I’d be had I spent the night tossing and turning.
It’s taken some trial and error for me to figure out which dosages and combinations of ingredients help me fall asleep and stay asleep, without unwanted after effects. Here are a few CBD oil products for sleep that I’ve tried to on my path to nighttime bliss.
By far the most powerful CBD oil in my sample, Venice Circle’s oil contains all the cannabinoids of the hemp plant and works not only for sleep, but also for pain relief. I squirted a little drop under my tongue and almost immediately began to feel the effects. The powerful dose means that the 2,000 mg bottle could last for months. The downside: It’s available only by mail order or in person at the Venice Beach store.
This organic CBD oil is infused with the superfoods moringa and acerola cherry, and has 20 times the potency of most CBD, since it’s water-soluble, which means it passes right through the mouth and stomach membranes instead of getting broken down in the liver. Soon after dropping some into my mouth, my eyes started to close. The downside is its less-than-delicious taste. I hold my nose when I swallow it, then I immediately brush my teeth.
This spray’s formula is specifically designed for sleep, with not only CBD, but also melatonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and valerian root. It also comes in peppermint flavor, so I didn’t have to worry about the taste. Just a spray or two under my tongue sent me into dreamland.
This one tastes so good, I wanted to swish it around in my mouth for a while. Its effects were more subtle than the others, but it helped me relax without feeling drowsy in the morning.
With 3,000 mg of hemp oil — that’s 5 mg per drop — this tincture will knock out even the worst insomniacs, including me. There’s also a version for pets so nobody furry is waking you up in the middle of the night. Sweet dreams!
